Google Ads vs SEO: Which Should Your Business Start With?

“Should I invest in SEO or Google Ads?” is one of the most common questions I get from business owners. I offer both services, so I have no reason to push one over the other. The honest answer is that it depends on your timeline, budget and how competitive your market is. Here is how I help clients decide.

How SEO and Google Ads differ

Both put your business in front of people searching on Google, but they work in very different ways.

  • Google Ads places your business at the top of search results as soon as your campaign goes live. You pay every time someone clicks. When you stop paying, the traffic stops.
  • SEO earns your website a place in the organic (unpaid) results. It takes months to build, but once you rank, the traffic keeps coming without a cost per click.

When Google Ads is the better starting point

  • You need leads now. A new business, a product launch or a seasonal offer cannot wait six months for SEO to kick in.
  • You want to test demand. Ads tell you quickly which keywords and offers actually convert, before you invest in long-term content.
  • Your market is very competitive. If big brands dominate the organic results, ads can get you visible while you build authority.
  • You sell something with a clear, high-intent search. Searches like “emergency plumber near me” or “buy office chair online” suit ads because people are ready to act.

When SEO is the better starting point

  • You are thinking long term. SEO builds an asset that keeps producing traffic and leads for years.
  • Your budget is limited. Ads need ongoing spend. SEO takes effort upfront but does not charge you per click.
  • Your customers research before buying. Informational searches, comparisons and guides are where SEO shines and ads get expensive.
  • Clicks in your industry are expensive. In fields like legal, finance or real estate, a single ad click can cost a lot. Ranking organically for those terms is worth far more.

The real answer for most businesses: use both

For most of my clients, the best plan combines the two:

  1. Start Google Ads to bring in leads from day one and find out which keywords convert.
  2. Use that data to guide SEO. The keywords that convert well in ads become the priority pages for SEO.
  3. Reduce ad spend over time as organic rankings grow, and keep ads running only where they still pay off.

The two channels also support each other. Showing up in both the paid and organic results for the same search builds trust and increases the total number of clicks you get.

Quick comparison

  • Speed: Google Ads gives results in days. SEO usually takes three to six months or more.
  • Cost model: Ads charge per click. SEO is an investment in content, technical work and links.
  • Longevity: Ad traffic stops when spending stops. SEO traffic continues.
  • Control: Ads let you choose exact keywords, locations and budgets. SEO depends on Google’s algorithm.
  • Measurement: Both can be tracked closely with GA4 and conversion tracking.

Whatever you choose, track conversions

The biggest mistake I see is spending money on either channel without measuring results. Set up conversion tracking for calls, form submissions and purchases with GA4 and Google Tag Manager before you start. That way, you know exactly which channel brings in customers, not just clicks.
